Occasionally Studio Stitches is contacted with an unusal request:

- Can you help with making a bag to carry my dog in?

The dog lost a leg in an accident, and the owner wanted something to carry the dog when they went hill walking.

The owner had tried many bags and designs, finally deciding on a design that would work for both of them. The dog is large so for stability, it would need to feel secure when being carried.

The first bag we made together was too roomy and not supportive enough for the dogs spine and definitely not worth showing here.

This second bag is better. It is a toddler carry bag so has the strength to hold the dog. It is free standing which makes it easier to get on and off. It has rigid sides which will help to support the spine. The dog will sit with it's legs through the holes and its one front paw on the owner's shoulders.

The first stage is to make the leg holes. These have been cut and bound with cotton covered quilting wadding for comfort. We are going to test this. I've left quite a large area intact at the top of the hole, as this will be working hard supporting the spine. If it's too narrow, then it may break. If the bag is not long enough for the dog, the second stage will be lengthening the bag.

How I wish I can get my pet that carry dog bag, but I can't since my dog are not comfortable carrying her. She likes to roam around smelling the grass or playing with her 3 puppies. I hope the dog that will benefit your custom made carry dog bag will enjoy the places that her master go. May you help more special cases dog in creating things that will fit them.

Hopefully this dog will get out more with it's family and be able to explore between carries. He's a lovely dog and so accepting of his life on three legs. The family have tried quite a few ways to carry him that's not only comfortable for him, but safe for the person carrying him., especially when hill climbing.
